Is Pop Culture Good For You?

Throughout the two weeks of learning about pop culture I found that pop culture isn’t good for our generation. Pop culture has become a source of “ideas, interest or choices that reach a critical mass within the society, they become widespread and proliferate through the society.” Our society is a generation where instagram, facebook, snapchat and other media that never existed before create impact on an individual or a group of people. New forms of threatening outcomes have appeared ever since pop culture came into the light for example cyber bullying, trends, scams, violence and profanity. The widespread use of social media also has positive outcomes by helping the vulnerable, by creating a wave of change or even uniting different cultures. In the video Why Pop Culture? Ted Talk Alexander Philippe shows the viewers how a cute kitty compares to the grumpy cat people like the ridiculous and funny “memes”. Another example he showed was Mitt Romney how we pass him as trivial because he is just a politician but it is more interesting or liked when Mitt Romney is with a binder filled with women. Another form of social media is the video games or the promotions of many games for children under 13 like Minecraft, fortnight, and other video games filled with violence and consume the time of the children. The youtubers have an influential impact on children with nonsense and foul language rather than educational facts or any information about society.

Pop culture, from what it used to be from common culture to folk culture and now to mass culture. Newspaper, television and radios were the impact of society with the information about politics, religion and other important facts. Let’s question why is the media not promoting such common ideas or facts? It is all because of the likes and how one post, tweet, video can be spread worldwide. The likes is what decides what should be looked at or viewed at, is the one that makes a difference. In some cases these fast actions are an advantage to help change something in our society like “Small Changes” by Gladwell, how one post was spread and the person recovered his phone and the person was sent to prison for punishment. It could be a terrible disadvantage when someone spreads a post that can ruin someone's life, or constant promotion which can be scams that people can fall for and also how much a person can be involved in social media. One example would be the tic toc trends of cinnamon powder, or making people trip without noticing them or the fake trip of the water bottle and when it gets a million views other people do it which can lead to deaths or can hurt people. Is pop culture good and my answer is no because we will live our lives focusing on social media instead of looking around our surroundings. I feel social media absorbs most of our time and impacts our lives more than we want to notice because it's accessible anywhere.
