Are we products of our environment or products of our expectations?
What do environment and expectations mean in this question? Our environment includes surroundings like: status, family, experiences, society, and expectations is the perspective, choices, and influences of others that you permit to change your life. The choices we make are the people we become in the future—the thought of being the products of our environment or our expectations struck me. This thought should be questioning every step you take in your life because, in life, we experience or pass through many stages and people in our lives that change us as individuals. If we were to think logically, wouldn't those with an excellent background be successful and those with terrible wouldn't succeed.
In some cases, that is not true because children make different choices because they decide to listen to lousy influence or let their bad experiences get to their future. I would have loved it if someone were to ask me about this three years ago when I was in high school because I would have said, "We are products of our expectations." The reason is that I have always wanted to be a teacher in my life. I enjoyed school; I considered it my second home. I enjoy the bonds I made with my teacher and the help I always had available at all costs. I decided to be a teacher from that moment, and every year, it was always a dream. The dream was crushed in high school, where everything was a competition. Grades, clubs, and connections were necessary because that was the. only opportunity to get into a "great college for a better future."When the supervisor asked me what my plan was for the future, the dream that I once had was shattered by her, and how my peers wanted to be doctors, scientists, or engineers, I took a wrong path that semester. I struggled financially and emotionally for the career that I chose because the expectations from everyone were overwhelming me. I realized that the choice I made wasn't really who I was but more of what people wanted me to become. I wanted to become an engineer because I believe that a career earns money for my family, and I can provide for them because they never had richness. I did not choose that career because of my family status but I was scared to be judged and destroy the expectations others had towards me. I realized that I was stepping away from my happiness and trying to make other people happy. I believe "The Other Wes More: One Name, Two Fates: Wes Moore" Explains how both stray away from their environment or themselves to follow their expectations and become products of those. You are the one walking the path that I meant for you. Don't walk on a drawn path by someone else.

Hi Jennifer! I really liked how you shared your personal story of what expectations were there for you. I agree with what you said about the choices we make have an influence on us as individuals.
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way: an experience develop one but we always have the choice of what we do next. Our experiences shape us,
ReplyDeleteand with experiences comes with your environment, too. This is why I was a little conflicted on which one to pick.
I really liked the example you used surrounding the career path you decided to follow. I agree with you, as I found myself struggling with the same situation in past semesters. It's important to follow what you want for yourself.
