Coping With Difficult Situations
There are moments that I have felt a sense of anger, sadness, alone, or overwhelmed in my life. The question is, how do I cope with all the feelings and the problem all around me. I have learned the best coping mechanism that best fits me is music, drawing, or cleaning. Music has always been an escape getaway to encourage my spirits. There are days when I argue with my parents or have made a regretful decision that brings me to the
get of sadness. My emotions are too strong for me to deal and in those difficult situations when I am down is music. Music is the magic of happiness and the calmer of emotions. Music is an escape where you can tune everyone out and make you think, "Everything will be alright." Since I was a little girl, I have been fascinated with the music of any genre, whether it be pop, classical, country, or any language. I was around people who also enjoyed listening to music, and all I picture is people dancing with smiles on their faces. I enjoy music more when I walk because the wind blowing on my face and the music surrounding me is as if I am in my beautiful and happy world.
The second thing that helps me relax is drawing. When I feel overwhelmed with homework, my family, and friendships, I start to draw cartoon characters. It begins with my childhood because I was never born into the age where iPhones or laptops were invented. My life revolved around cartoons like Popeyes, pink panther, scooby doo, and drawing these characters reminds me of my memories. The concentration and the time to precisely sketch each character's feature eases my mind and makes me forget why I was feeling the way I felt. I believe that everyone has a way to destress themselves, and I found it around music and drawing.
For The Other Wes Moore, Moore's Uncle Howard suggests that Wes and his friends play basketball so he wouldn't feel less for living in "mutually exclusive worlds." In life, we all need that escape and find a coping routine or activities to help us deal with complex problems or situations. It can be 5 or 9 activities, but it is essential to have at least one because a human being can only do so much in their lifetime.
Another relief activity I do is cleaning because I believe a clean home makes you see clarity in the future. A clean space can calm my brain or my thoughts. If I did not have these coping mechanisms, I would be a total mess every day. The activities are here to help us escape or have fun in our lives because we will have to deal with family and work problems or people who may hurt us. In Moore's case, he feels that he's living two different lives.
A coping activity should be something that will help your well-being or relationships, like a sport or something that you can reflect on to aid you through your day. Baking, reading, and writing stories are other activities to relieve stress. It's always important to remember not to fall into those bad habits like drugs, alcohol, or other activities that can harm your well-being.
Jennifer,
ReplyDeleteI can relate to your use of music as a coping mechanism. I do the same thing. Anytime I'm overwhelmed or stressed out, i know music will help calm me down, or motivate me to do something I don't want to do.
I can relate to this post when it comes to distracting ourselves from our feelings, and trying to find ways to make ourselves better. When we heal from something, those feelings flood again, and it leaves people to think they never "got over it." I tend to overthink a lot, and when I get out of that phase, I swear I wouldn't go back, and I always end up overthinking again. This is why I think having hobbies are great for times like this because it can give you a form of release.
ReplyDeleteI can relate with what you said about drawing. For me it is another form of art: painting. But the attentions to the little details helps the mind forget about whatever stresses you were dealing with
ReplyDeleteI like that drawing is a positive outlet for you it gives you the chance to use your imagination and unique design to make a picture. Similar to your drawing is also a way to escape from the real world for me, and I also like listening and creating beats. At some point in life it is important that everyone has a positive outlet in their lives when something is going wrong.
